Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Figure Sketches, Colombia or Ecuador - 1853 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite study of architecture, not a landscape or a figure, with pointed arches and tiered wall bands drawn in fine, economical lines.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper, yellowed and stained by age, dominates the sheet, with the grey graphite line sitting lightly across it. At upper left, a row of pointed arches with small cusps runs beneath a projecting cornice line. Below, horizontal string courses divide the sheet into tiers of narrow upright members and recessed panels. A tall rectangular grid stands apart at right, its horizontal bars and small inset panels set off from the main structure. Faint handwritten fractions in the upper right corner show proportions being worked out on the spot.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing records how a building is organised: where its arches fall, how its columns stack, how its bands of wall step back. Notations like these were working references, checked against measurements and carried into finished paintings. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), a leading Hudson River School painter trained under Thomas Cole, made the sheet in 1853, and catalogue records tie it to a South American journey to Colombia or Ecuador that produced many field studies. The sheet shows the careful observation behind his larger work.

Built for Close Reading

Worn across the chest, this study keeps the scale of a sketchbook page. The arches and string courses read as you move, and the fractions in the upper right sit where the eye lands first. The design rewards a second look, much as Church's working drawings reward anyone who studies the proportions closely.
