Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Gnarled Tree and Weed, Obersee, Germany - July 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil landscape study of a lake shore, with a shrub mirrored in still water beneath a billowing cloud.

Visual Elements & Composition

The warm parchment ground takes up most of the sheet, with graphite grey doing all the work. A rounded, feathery shrub stands at the centre of the shore, its crown ragged with short strokes, and its reflection falls straight down into the water. Hills rise on the left and ease toward the right, and a single ridge with a rounded knoll sits beyond the shoreline. Above them, a large cloud is built from scalloped contours. Handwritten colour words in red, grey and green run across the sky and along the shore, alongside the catalogue number 1917.4.307 in the lower margin.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing is a working note on tone and reflection. The reflected shrub is drawn with fewer, looser marks than the shore, which shows Church testing how a dark mass shifts on the surface of water. The colour words point to a painting to come: the pencil fixes the shapes while the written hues hold the colour for later. Church was a leading figure of the Hudson River School, and his large landscapes were built from sketches like this one, made on site and carried into the studio. This leaf, recorded under the title Obersee, Germany, dates to July 1868 and shows field observation becoming finished canvas.

Wearing the Study

A study like this is meant to be seen up close, and a tee brings it to eye level as the wearer moves. The shrub and its reflection sit at the centre of the front, so the composition reads as the drawing was made: one dark mass above its mirror image, with the cloud and hills opening around it. The quiet, measured line suits a shirt worn through an ordinary day, and the design keeps the focus on the tree, the water and the sky.
