Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Iceberg near Battle Harbour, Canada - July 9, 1859 v2 - T-Shirt

A single iceberg rises from a flat sea in this pencil study, its pale, fractured mass picked out in white against a grey-green ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The iceberg sits in profile above a horizontal waterline and dominates the sheet. Its tall, angular form ends in a jagged pinnacle, while a deep shadow opens in the recess at its lower left. A lower shelf extends to the right and breaks into a low, ragged ledge that trails across the water. A faint, small shape sits at the far left edge. The palette is restrained: white highlights over graphite on tinted paper, with the handwritten date, July 9, 1859, inscribed in the lower right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing records the iceberg as a documented natural form, identified with the coast near Battle Harbour on Labrador. Icebergs drifting south along that shore were a striking sight for nineteenth-century travellers, and their sculpted surfaces gave artists a study in light, mass and transience. Frederic Edwin Church, a landscape painter of the Hudson River School, made voyages to Newfoundland and Labrador in the late 1850s to study icebergs and the northern coast. Sheets like this one, dated to a single day, were field observations he later drew on for finished compositions.

Wearing the Iceberg

Printed across the chest, the iceberg reads best at arm's length, where its tall silhouette and shadowed recess resolve into one form. The shelf runs across the body as the shirt moves, and the dated inscription stays small, a quiet detail for anyone who looks closely. The tee carries the drawing's stillness into everyday wear, with the white highlights holding their place against the grey-green field of the design.
