Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Landscape near Guaranda, Ecuador - June 4, 1857 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a field study of the Ecuadorian Andes, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church on the spot during his June 1857 travels near the town of Guaranda.

Visual Elements & Composition

The image is built from rugged mountain forms, ridges and folded terrain rendered in graphite and brush with white gouache on tan paper. The tan ground shows through the sketch, so the highlights read as light catching the highlands. Church works quickly and directly here, with the terrain filling most of the frame and no figures or text competing for attention.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church was a central figure of the American Hudson River School, and he worked under the influence of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. For Church, the South American landscape showed the unity of nature and science. This study pairs precise observation of the terrain with a romantic sense of wonder at the scale of the Andes. It is a preparatory sketch for his large canvas The Heart of the Andes, and it records the empirical exploration of the nineteenth century.

Made for the Wearer Who Looks Closely

A sketch like this rewards a close look, and a tee keeps the design at chest height where it can be read up close. The drawing's fine graphite detail and open, airy gouache highlights carry across the front of the shirt, so the ridgelines and valleys stay visible as you move. Wear it as a reminder of an artist who worked outdoors among the mountains he drew.
