Visual Elements & Composition

In the mid-nineteenth century, Niagara was a symbol of the continent's untamed majesty and of divine creation. Church approached it as a working observer: this study records the geology of the gorge with the precision of a scientist while holding on to the awe of a painter. The stone and water meeting at the ledge stand for nature as a record of geological time. Church, a leading figure of the Hudson River School, made studies like this as preparation for his monumental landscapes, and this sheet followed his landmark 1857 painting of Niagara.
