This is a close, unhurried study of lichen rendered in graphite by Frederic Edwin Church during the summer of 1844 in the Catskill Mountains.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from the granular, irregular forms of lichen spreading across a natural surface. No horizon, sky or distant view intrudes. Church fills the frame with the growth itself, so the eye moves across clusters of small, overlapping shapes rather than toward a single focal point.
