Meaning & Symbolism

In the nineteenth century, a landscape like this carried national weight. The American wilderness stood for the continent's scale and for a young nation's sense of itself, and the Maine coast was a frontier where the ocean pressed against ancient rock. Church, a student of Thomas Cole and one of the most prominent figures of the Hudson River School, treated such scenes as meditations on time, geology and creation. Aligned with transcendentalist thought, the untouched shore was offered as a place for contemplation and renewal.
