Visual Elements & Composition

Pencil grey and light grey wash sit on a warm cream ground that fills most of the sheet. Meaning & Symbolism

Church made sketches like this on location as working records, noting the forms of settlements, vegetation and terrain so he could return to them later. The colour annotation and numbered marks show the sheet was meant to be consulted again. His Ecuador drawings and oil studies from 1857 fed the large exhibition canvases of a leading Hudson River School painter, and this sheet shows his method of recording observed scenes in graphite before resolving them in paint.
