Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Mixed Sketches with Chimneys and Waterfall, Berchtesgaden, Germany - July 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

A pencil study of a spreading tree, drawn in July 1868 in Berchtesgaden, Germany, by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church.

Visual Elements & Composition

The tree fills the right half of a warm cream sheet. Heavier, darker branches fork outward in long horizontal sweeps, while clusters of loose foliage are built up around them with soft, feathered graphite strokes. The trunk descends at the lower right, shaded with vertical hatching. A faint outline of further branches appears at the top right edge. At the left, a column of handwritten notes describes the bark as grey, the branches as dark reddish brown, and the foliage as light, yellowish green, with the place name Berchtesgaden and the month written above them.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing treats the tree as a study of structure and tone. Dark, angular branches set against pale masses of leaf let the form read clearly even in the simplest marks. The written notes record the colours that graphite cannot carry, and the caption fixes the locality. Together they show Church preparing a reference to guide the colour and finish of a later painting. His habit of recording individual trees closely in the field gave his larger landscapes their botanical accuracy and their sense of a specific, observed place.

Why It Works on a Tee

A tee is seen at conversation distance, so this drawing rewards a closer look. Up close, the feathered pencil strokes, the vertical hatching on the trunk and the handwritten colour notes all come into focus. The branches read as strong dark lines against the lighter foliage, giving the wearer a clear study of form rather than a busy image.
