Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is pale ochre paper, and the drawing covers most of it in short, horizontal, feathered strokes. The marks are densest across the upper left and thin out toward the lower right, so the sky reads as a gradient of weight rather than a single view. Numerals sit between the bands, and two handwritten words run diagonally along the left edge. Near the base, a narrow darker strip marks a low shoreline in haze, and the word grey is written in the lower centre.

Meaning & Symbolism

The numerals turn weather into a set of steps. Each value assigns a tone to a band of cloud, so the sequence of greys and lights could be carried into paint later. Church, a leading painter of the Hudson River School, built his skies on close observation like this, and studies of this kind gave his finished oil landscapes their structure. The title anchors the sky above the Hudson, the valley at the centre of much of his work, and dates the sheet to March 1865.
