Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Morning Mist over Berchtesgaden, Germany, Part One - July 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite study of the Berchtesgaden range in Germany, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church in July 1868, with the mist settling across the Bavarian Alps at first light.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite on tan wove paper, so every tone sits within a warm grey range. Rugged peaks rise through the lower and middle of the sheet, and soft, feathered shading shows where the mist pulls across their faces and hollows. The mist is the drawing's real subject: it is left light in places and dense in others, which lets the mountains appear and disappear as the eye moves across the page. There is no text or numerals.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church belonged to the Hudson River School and was known for close observation of the natural world. In the 1860s, after his American landscapes, he turned to Europe, and this study records the Bavarian Alps with the same precision he gave to the Americas. The work belongs to the mid-nineteenth-century interest in the sublime, when vast mountain scale was read as a sign of divine order and of human smallness. The mist gives the study its meaning: it marks a passing moment of high-altitude weather, and it makes a fleeting condition of the landscape the subject of the drawing.

Wearing the Mist

A tee moves with the body, so this drawing changes as you do. The mountains sit across the chest and shift with each turn, and the pale areas of mist read differently from across a room than they do up close. The design rewards a second look, much like the sketch rewards a slow study on paper.
