Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Niagara Falls from Prospect Point, New York - probably 1856 v1 - T-Shirt

This graphite drawing places the viewer at the edge of Niagara Falls, looking out over the colossal volume of water that plunges into the gorge below.

Visual Elements & Composition

The work is rendered in graphite on gray-green wove paper, so the falls read in quiet tones of grey and dark shadow rather than bright colour. The rushing torrent fills the centre of the sheet and dominates the composition, while the rugged rock and foliage of the surrounding terrain frame it on either side. Church's line work moves from dense, dark passages at the base of the cataract to lighter, open marks in the spray, giving the water weight and motion.

Meaning & Symbolism

In the nineteenth century, Niagara Falls stood for the untamed majesty of the American landscape and for a sense of divine providence in the continent's wilderness. Church drew on the idea of the sublime, the mix of awe, terror and spiritual transcendence that nature's overwhelming force produced in the viewer. As a leading figure of the Hudson River School, he combined careful observation with Romantic feeling, and this study reflects his lasting interest in monumental natural phenomena. The drawing is held in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection and dates to about 1856.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is seen up close, worn at chest height and viewed as the wearer turns, which suits a drawing built on a sense of nearness to the edge. The falls appear as the viewer would stand at Prospect Point, with the force of the water pulling the eye down into the gorge. Printed across the front, the drawing keeps Church's sense of scale and the sublime that made Niagara a national emblem.
