This design reproduces a study by Frederic Edwin Church of a rugged, split mountain range in the Andes, set in either Colombia or Ecuador.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built around a broken ridge of mountains that fills the sheet. Church works across the full width of the view, so the rock faces, fissures and high summits read as one massive landform rather than isolated peaks. The study was drawn in graphite and brushed with white gouache on off-white paper, which gives the image its pale, tonal character and sharp contrast between lit ridges and shadowed clefts. Nothing competes with the terrain: there are no figures and no text, only land and light.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this work during his South American travels in the 1850s, when he was a leading figure of the Hudson River School. Like the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt before him, he approached the Andes as a place of scientific inquiry and romantic awe. In his paintings, mountains stand for the sublime power of nature and for the vastness of creation, and this study shows the raw geology that later fed his monumental finished canvases. It is a record of field observation as much as an image of wilderness.

On the Tee

A tee is worn, so this landscape moves with the body. The rifted range reads at arm's length across the chest, then opens up into finer detail of cracks and ridgelines as the wearer turns or leans in. The original study is held in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection, and this shirt carries its jagged, expansive structure into everyday wear.
