Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite and white gouache on gray-green paper. The gray-green ground stays visible between the strokes, so the peaks read as light against a mid-tone field. Each summit rises with soft, careful shading, and the contours of the slopes are laid out with clear, deliberate lines. Meaning & Symbolism

Church made the study during his travels through the Andes, working from direct observation. In the nineteenth century, volcanoes carried a dual meaning: they were sublime and frightening, and they were also the source of new land shaped by the Earth's forces. Church drew them with scientific precision while keeping a sense of awe, following Alexander von Humboldt's call for artists to portray the physiognomy of the Andes. As the leading painter of the Hudson River School, he set this kind of observed landscape within wider ideas about nature and the order of the world.
