Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this study in July 1868, during a European trip that was more reflective than his expeditions to South America or the Arctic. The Königssee was a celebrated stop in nineteenth-century travel culture, and Church approached it as part of the period's interest in the sublime: the idea that nature's permanence and scale stand against the brief span of human life. The stillness of the water and the immovable rock carry that idea directly. As a Hudson River School painter, Church brought the same attention to atmosphere and detail that marked his American landscapes to this European subject.
