Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Roman Sarcophagus - October 1868 v3 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil study by Frederic Edwin Church of a stone sarcophagus seen in side view, with a winged relief panel, rounded corner supports and a scrolled end.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on graphite and cream. The sarcophagus body sits across the middle of the sheet, with a rectangular relief panel in its upper half where a winged creature is set out in loose, sweeping contours. Rounded supports rise at either end, and the lid terminates at right in a scroll decorated with small medallions. A heavy base steps out beneath. To the left, a rough mass of broken masonry with vertical striations fills the background, and the stone's uneven surface is suggested by a few light marks. The mood is austere and measured, with the object carrying the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The winged figure belongs to a long funerary tradition, where such creatures were placed on tombs to guard the dead or mark their passage. Church drew the sarcophagus as a constructed object, showing how the supports and scrolled end turn a plain block into sculpture. The broken stonework recalls ancient monuments found weathered and partly ruined. Made in the late 1860s during Church's travels abroad, this sheet comes from a practice better known for American landscape, and it records a monument studied for its design and state of preservation.

Designed for the Wearer's Chest

A sarcophagus is a tall, closed form, and this design sits across the front of a tee in a single horizontal band, so the relief panel and scrolled end read clearly at a glance. The broken masonry at left gives the composition its weight, and the drawing's cream and graphite tones suit a shirt worn in everyday settings.
