Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sangay Volcano, Ecuador - July 11, 1857 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a dated field study of Sangay Volcano, drawn in Ecuador on July 11, 1857, by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church.

Visual Elements & Composition

The study is worked in graphite, with brush and white gouache on tan wove paper. The tan ground sets a warm, muted base, and the white gouache picks out the highlights on the volcanic slopes and ridges. The volcano's form anchors the sheet, with the surrounding highland terrain built up in tonal layers. Nothing is decorative. Every mark follows the shape of the land.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made the study during his second expedition to the Andes, and it reflects his direct engagement with the region. Alexander von Humboldt, whose work joined empirical science with landscape art, inspired Church's interest in South American volcanoes. For nineteenth-century naturalists and artists, a volcano like Sangay stood for the sublime, unfinished forces still shaping the Earth. The drawing records that idea at its source: an active summit observed on the spot, the raw material for the larger paintings Church would later complete.

Wearing the Study

A tee carries its image across the body, so this study is seen up close and in motion, as the wearer moves through the day. The restrained graphite and white tones read clearly at a glance and reward a second look at the ridgelines and the volcano's silhouette. Wearing it puts a record of Church's 1857 journey into everyday view.
