Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sketches of Camels and Riders, Palestine (Israel) - February–March 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

A pencil study of rock faces and jagged ridgelines, annotated by hand with a note on the colour of the stone, drawn in Palestine in 1868.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is narrow and divided into three zones. A stepped cliff face fills the left, a single tall rock mass sits at centre, and a row of peaks runs across the upper right, with a smaller boulder set in its own bordered box below. The drawing works through line alone, with directional hatching describing the rock surfaces. A vertical handwritten note runs down the middle: Beautiful effect like changeable silk - soft browns & yellow browns with golden tinge. The palette is restrained, dominated by cream paper and graphite grey, with the warm tones existing only in the writing.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church (1826–1900), a leading Hudson River School painter, travelled to the Near East in 1867–1868, and this sheet belongs to that campaign. The sketch records observed rock structure and light, while the written remark captures a quality of sheen that pencil could not hold. Church intended such notes to guide finished paintings, so the page is a bridge between field observation and studio work. The sheet is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection under accession number 1917.4.524.

Designed for the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The sheet's tall, narrow format and central column of text suit the front of a tee, where the eye moves down from the peaks to the handwritten line. The image rewards a close look, as the hatching and annotations reveal more the nearer you stand, which fits a garment worn and viewed at arm's length.
