Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sunbeams between Clouds, with Bulls - 1844 - 1846 v2 - T-Shirt

This second pencil study by Frederic Edwin Church pairs a bull beneath a sunlit cloud with a handwritten note on light breaking between two clouds.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built on a pale cream sheet with a deckled left edge, mounted on a grey ground. A bull is drawn in economical pencil strokes, its head turned down toward the left and its body rising through the centre of the page. Above its back, a cloud is sketched in short, broken marks. A second animal outline is faintly traced at the upper left, and the lower half of the sheet is left almost bare. In the upper right, handwritten lines dominate the text: Sometimes the sun shining between two clouds thus, one of them is enveloped about the sun with a bright orange glow while the other is left cool and distinct.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing and its written note make one observation. Sunlight passing through a gap between two clouds makes one cloud glow orange around the sun while the other stays cool and sharply edged. The cloud over the bull records that contrast in outline, placing a rural subject inside a passing weather effect. Church (1826–1900) was a leading painter of the Hudson River School, and sheets like this, which pair a sketch with a verbal description of colour and light, show the observational method behind his finished landscapes. This version is one of a series of studies of the same subject.

Wearing the Study

Printed across the chest, the sheet becomes a page you carry rather than a picture you view from across a room. The handwriting is legible at close range, so the note about light reads as you move, and the bull and cloud sit at the centre of the frame where the eye lands first.
