Visual Elements & Composition

Soft, cloud-like forms drift across the upper half of the page in pale cream and graphite grey. Through the centre, horizontal strokes thicken into darker banding, and a ridged line runs along the lower left. Numbered marks and handwritten notes are scattered across the sheet, naming colours such as red, cool purple and greenish, then moving through smoky gold, more orange, reddish brown and a dazzling gold line. The handwriting is as much a part of the composition as the drawing itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

The study is a working record of colour rather than a finished view. Each numbered stage marks a step in the fading light, and the note on cloud shade shows Church tracking tonal change as the sun dropped. Made outdoors, the pencil outline gives structure, and the colour was meant to be built on it later. Church (1826–1900) was a Hudson River School landscape painter, and studies like this one fed the large oil paintings that made his reputation. The sheet shows sunset as a sequence of moments rather than a single instant.
