Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sunset over Hilltops, Jamaica - August 1865 v3 - T-Shirt

This design reproduces a Jamaican hillside at sunset, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church during his stay on the island in August 1865.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is a broad landscape. Rolling hilltops fill the lower part of the scene and carry the eye across the terrain, while the sky above them holds the last light of the day. Church gives the eye a steady path through light and shadow, so the ridges step back in layers as the daylight fades. The original was worked in oil and graphite on paperboard, and that layering of tone is what gives the image its depth.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this study in the wake of the American Civil War and after the death of his children. He travelled to the Caribbean in search of renewal and new subjects, and the unfamiliar tropical landscape became a place to meet vast, distant topography. The hills and the fading sun speak to endurance and to the sublime scale of nature. Church was one of the leading figures of the Hudson River School, known for monumental paintings of landscapes across North and South America, and this sketch shows his lifelong habit of working directly from observed light.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee puts the image across the chest and lets it move with the person wearing it. The hilltops and the sunset sit on the body rather than on a wall, so the scene is seen up close as well as from across a room. Wearing it turns a quiet, contemplative study of evening light into something carried through the day.
