Frederic Edwin Church, American, - The Blue Mountains, from Bloxburgh, Jamaica - August 1865 v2 - T-Shirt

Frederic Edwin Church's landscape of the Blue Mountains, recorded on Jamaica in August 1865, shows a mountain range seen with patient, close observation.

Visual Elements & Composition

Church worked in graphite and white gouache on light green wove paper. The green ground sits behind the entire sheet, and the white gouache picks out the lighter passages across the terrain, while graphite lines build the slopes, valleys and foliage. The mountains rise in layered forms that recede toward the horizon, so the eye moves from the nearer ground into the distance. There are no figures and no text. The landscape is the whole subject.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church travelled to Jamaica shortly after the American Civil War and the loss of his children. He turned to the tropical landscape of the West Indies for solace, and the drawing records that retreat into nature's vast and enduring scale. As a leading figure of the Hudson River School, he was known for monumental views of the Andes, Niagara Falls and the Arctic. This Caribbean sheet widened that range and presents the Blue Mountains as a place of restorative beauty, seen by an observant outsider.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A drawing made through close looking suits a shirt worn in everyday motion. The image sits across the chest, where the wearer sees it in a mirror and others see it at conversational distance. As the body moves, the layered mountains shift with it. The pale green ground and the restrained graphite linework give the front of the shirt a quiet, contemplative presence.
