Frederic Edwin Church, American, - The Catskill Escarpment at Sunset, Hudson, New York - possibly 1860 v3 - T-Shirt

This is an annotated pencil colour study of a smoky sunset over the Catskill escarpment, with numbered zones and written notes that record the tints the artist saw.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite on pale grey-beige paper dominates the sheet, with the sky built from soft, layered horizontal bands. Clouds gather in the upper portion as darker grey smudges and small sepia accents, while the lower third holds rising ridges shaded with diagonal hatching. Numerals mark each zone, and handwritten notes sit beside them: single words such as smoky, glow and purple, alongside longer passages like topaz light and beautiful light blue blurred with smoky. The drawing works less as a finished picture than as a key, with each numbered shape paired with a verbal hue.

Meaning & Symbolism

The word smoky returns like a refrain, showing that haze, rather than sharp outline, was the quality Church wanted to hold. The contrast between the cool blue passage and the warm golden sun in the notes records the shifting relations of colour he needed to settle before committing to canvas. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), a student of Thomas Cole, was among the most prominent painters of the Hudson River School. The Catskills remained a touchstone for him even after he travelled widely in the Americas, and studies like this one prepared his large oil landscapes.

Made for the Tee

A sunset study reads best at arm's length, and a tee carries it across the chest where the eye settles in conversation. The sky's soft bands and handwritten colour names translate well to a shirt worn through an ordinary day, the haze of the original sheet becoming part of how the garment looks as you move.
