Frederic Edwin Church, American, - The Iceberg, Canada - 1859 v3 - T-Shirt

A pencil study by Frederic Edwin Church sets towering icebergs against calm northern water, with a single two-masted sailing vessel placed at their base to show their scale.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite on tan paper carries the whole image in shades of grey. Two principal masses dominate: a flat-topped, stepped form on the left and a jagged, peaked summit on the right. A lower, mottled ice form recedes between them. Short vertical hatching and angular planes describe the faceted ice, while faint horizontal strokes suggest the sea and distant ice shelves. The small ship near the centre waterline is the only human element, and it anchors the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

Icebergs drifting south from Arctic waters along the coasts of Labrador and Newfoundland were regarded in the nineteenth century as both sublime and perilous. Church made this drawing on his northern voyage of 1859, when icebergs were among the subjects he studied directly from nature. The contrast between the vessel and the ice expresses the human scale of that encounter and a wider fascination with the power and remoteness of the natural world, a theme central to the Hudson River School. Church later developed sketches like this into large oil paintings in his studio.

Your Tee, Seen Up Close

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every angle as you move, so the iceberg silhouettes and the small ship stay in view as you go about your day. The hatching and faceted planes read best at a conversational distance, rewarding a closer look.
