This design is a study of towering clouds over Jamaica, drawn from the artist's own observation during his 1865 stay on the island.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sky takes up most of the picture, and the clouds are the main subject. Their shapes build up in heavy, billowing masses, with the landscape kept low and secondary so the weather holds the eye.
