Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing sits on warm grey paper and is worked almost entirely in graphite. Dense horizontal hatching fills the clouds across the upper centre and right, broken by smaller bands and scattered marks. The lower half is a broad, layered bank of diagonal strokes crossed by a pale path. Her figure, slight and upright at the left, is drawn with only a few vertical strokes for the folds of her skirt, and thin leafless trunks rise behind her. Pencilled tints in the upper right shift from reddish to yellowish to greenish.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church (1826–1900) was a central figure of the Hudson River School, known for grand landscapes that combined close observation with dramatic light. His work rarely includes people, which makes this small figure unusual in his output. The notes on colour show him recording how the light would change across the scene, and the woman's pause at the close of day turns an atmospheric study into a quiet human moment. The drawing reflects the sketchbook method through which he gathered material for larger paintings.
