Frederic Edwin Church, American, - View of the Palisadoes near Kingston, Jamaica - May–September 1865 v2 - T-Shirt

This design reproduces Frederic Edwin Church's view of the Palisadoes, the narrow sand tombolo that runs out from Kingston, Jamaica, in the mid-nineteenth century.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built on the long, low line of the Palisadoes, a thin strip of land stretching across open water. That horizontal spit gives the scene its structure, with the sea and sky opening wide on either side. Church's study of the coast is attentive to the shape of the land and the atmosphere that sits over it, so the eye moves slowly from the near shore toward the distance.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made his Caribbean journeys in the 1860s, after the loss of his infant children and during the disruptions of the American Civil War. He came to the tropics seeking solace and new subjects, and he approached them with the scientific naturalism of Alexander von Humboldt. The Palisadoes view records a specific place while also reflecting the nineteenth-century fascination with distant, scientifically curious landscapes. Church is one of the leading figures of the Hudson River School, and this work shows his commitment to rendering the earth with close observation.

Wearing the Coastline

A chest print gives this view a scale that a small object cannot. Worn on the body, the scene is seen up close in passing and at a distance in each glance across a room, so the strip of land and open water reads as a whole. The shirt carries Church's observation of Jamaica's shoreline into everyday wear, tying the tropical coast to the person wearing it.
