Visual Elements & Composition

Church was one of the leading painters of the Hudson River School, the mid-nineteenth-century American movement devoted to the natural landscape. Sketches like this one were outdoor studies. They recorded the structure of mountains and hills, and that observed form later shaped the larger studio paintings he made from them.
