George Catlin, born Wilkes-Barre, PA - Indians Surrounding Buffalo-no. 9 - unknown - T-Shirt

This lithograph by George Catlin shows a communal buffalo hunt on the Great Plains, with riders closing in on a herd during its most intense moment.

Visual Elements & Composition

The scene is built around the herd and the riders who engage it. The hunters and animals sit close together, so the eye moves between the two and reads the chase as one continuous action. The image is documentary in mood: it records the movement and positioning of the hunt rather than framing it as a single hero figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

For Plains communities of the nineteenth century, the bison supplied food, shelter, and tools, so the hunt was far more than a survival task. It reinforced social structure, spiritual belief, and communal identity. Catlin, an American lawyer and painter, spent much of the 1830s travelling among tribes in the American West to record their ways of life before, as he believed, they disappeared under westward expansion. This plate belongs to his Indian Gallery. His portrayals have been scrutinised for romanticising Native life, and they remain foundational documents of the frontier and of the era's ethnographic interests.

Wearing the Hunt

A tee carries its image across the chest and moves with the body, so the herd and riders are seen at close range in every glance. The composition's energy comes from its motion, and on a shirt that motion stays in view as you walk, turn, and sit. The design brings a 19th-century record of the Great Plains into everyday wear.
