Visual Elements & Composition

Edward I began the castle in 1283 as part of his conquest of Wales, and its walls and towers were built to project English royal authority over the region. Burr places that monument beside the everyday life of the town and its boats, so the drawing shows the fortress and the community growing up on the same shore. Made in August 1899, when restored castles drew many visitors, it records a single summer day in a travel sketch of Britain's historic sites at the turn of the twentieth century.
