George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, - (Sketchbook) Down Rhone Valley from Sierre - 1899 - T-Shirt

A pencil study of a broad Alpine valley, with a village set against the slope and a single church spire rising from its roofs.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing fills the right-hand page of an open sketchbook, and the left page is left almost blank. Steep mountain slopes frame the upper and central sheet and fall away on either side of a wide valley floor. In the lower right, closely grouped buildings with pitched roofs sit on a rise, dominated by a slender spire that stands as the only vertical accent against the horizontal sweep of the hills. Trees and shrubs fill the foreground, and a few loose lines suggest meadows and terraces. The palette is restrained: off-white paper, graphite grey and a deep slate shadow. Handwritten pencil notes in the lower left record colour and tonal observations, and an inscription in the lower right names the view, the valley of the Rhône, and the year 1899.

Meaning & Symbolism

The subject is the upper Rhône valley, the great trough that runs through the Valais canton of Switzerland. The sketch shows how the valley opens between mountains and how the settlement sits against the slope, with the spire marking the human presence in the landscape. The handwritten colour notes show the study was made as a record of a specific place and its tonal range, to be consulted later for finished paintings or prints. George Elbert Burr, the American painter and etcher, worked for long periods in Europe, and the Alpine valleys of Switzerland were a recurring source of motifs for artists of his generation.

Wearing the Valley

A sketchbook page is drawn to be read at close range, and this tee carries the drawing across the chest, where the spire and village sit at eye level. The open composition, with its quiet slopes and empty space, lets the pencil line stand on its own against the shirt. Wearing it puts a working study of the Rhône valley, made in 1899, on the scale of a single view.
