George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, - (Sketchbook) Near Sion - 1899 - T-Shirt

A pencil landscape from a sketchbook page, where a steep, hatched mountain rises above a field of bare and leafy trees near Sion, Switzerland.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing fills the right-hand page of an open sketchbook, with the left page left blank apart from a faint outline near the gutter. A steep mountain dominates the right side, its slopes built from diagonal pencil hatching and its summit broken into a few sharp angles. A lower ridge runs left, with softer hills receding behind it. Across the flat foreground stands a row of trees of varying height, some with full crowns and others with thin, bare branches. A small pitched-roof building sits among them near the centre. The palette is restrained: off-white paper, grey graphite and a dark teal accent. A pencil inscription in the lower right gives the place as Sion and the date 1899.

Meaning & Symbolism

The contrast between the massive, hatched mountain and the delicate line of the trees gives the drawing its structure. The small building between them marks human settlement within the landscape. Sion is the principal town of the Valais in southern Switzerland, and the view records an ordinary, carefully observed rural scene. George Elbert Burr, an American painter and etcher, spent long periods in Europe, and the mountains and valleys of Switzerland held the attention of artists of his generation. This page shows his economical pencil line and his skill in using hatching to describe mass and form.

Reading the Sketch on a Tee

A sketchbook page is made to be read slowly, and this design rewards the same attention. The mountain's hatched shading and the thin, scattered trees sit close to the eye, so the fine detail of Burr's pencil work stays legible up close. The quiet, measured mood of the original fits a garment worn through an ordinary day, much like the rural scene it records.
