Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746–1809 - Design for an Urn - ca. 1790 - Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee Design

A pen-and-ink study by Giuseppe Barberi, drawn around 1790, sets out the form of an urn with the precision of an architect's working drawing.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built in graphite and black ink, with brush and wash on paper giving the vessel its shaded volume. The urn sits as a single, centred form, its outline resolved through clean geometric curves and measured proportions. Nothing competes with the silhouette: the drawing is restrained, open, and organised around the balance of the vessel's body, base and rim.

Meaning & Symbolism

Urns of this kind were central to the Neoclassical movement, which looked back to ancient Greek and Roman antiquities for their gravitas and structural harmony. Owning or commissioning such a vessel signalled a link to the classical past and to Enlightenment values of order and reason. Barberi, a prominent Italian architect and draftsman, worked where architectural theory met decorative practice, and this study shows that bridge at the end of the eighteenth century.

Where the Drawing Meets the Shirt

Printed across the chest of a tee, the urn reads as a single, upright figure, its proportions meeting the eye at a comfortable distance. The restraint of the linework suits the plain cotton ground, letting the classical outline carry the piece without extra decoration. Wear it as a quiet nod to the drawing room and the study, where Barberi's sketches were made.
