Greater Coat of Arms of Dunkerque (France) T-Shirt - Design Description
This t-shirt showcases the magnificent Greater Coat of Arms of Dunkerque, a symbol rich in history and civic pride.
The Shield
The central element is the shield, which is divided horizontally into two distinct sections. The upper portion, known as the chief, features a golden (or) field emblazoned with a proud black lion passant, walking regally across the surface. This lion is armed and langued (tongue) in red, representing Dunkerque's historic connection to Flanders.
The lower portion, the base, presents a silver (white) field. A striking blue dolphin (couché - lying horizontally) is positioned on this field, complete with red crest and ear details. This dolphin, originally a fish symbolizing the city’s fishing heritage, was later adopted in honor of the Dauphin of France.
Supporter and Accoutrements
Enfolding the shield, a knight in armor – a marine or seaman knight – serves as the supporter, embodying the city’s defense and military strength.
Surrounding the shield are inscribed mottos. The first, “Dunkerque a bien mérité de la Patrie” (Dunkirk has well deserved the Fatherland), underscores the city's valor, specifically honoring its resilience after the 1793 siege. The second motto, “Ville héroïque, sert d’exemple à toute la Nation” (Heroic city, set as an example to the whole nation), further celebrates Dunkerque’s bravery.
Below the shield, several medals are displayed, representing the honors bestowed upon the city. These include the Legion of Honour, the Croix de Guerre with Palms (awarded for wartime bravery in both World Wars), and the Distinguished Service Cross (awarded by the United States, likely in recognition of Dunkerque’s role in World War I), demonstrating Dunkerque's history of valor.
