Henry Arthur Elkins, born Vershire, VT - Untitled - n.d. - T-Shirt

A pencil landscape built around one tall, windblown conifer rising from the foreground of a tan sheet, with a wooded valley opening out behind it.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite grey, light grey and olive grey on warm tan paper, with pale highlights left in the sky and along the ridgelines. A large pine stands near the centre of the sheet, its trunk leaning slightly and its branches drawn in open, scratchy strokes that thin toward the top. To the left, a rocky outcrop rises above a slope of smaller trees, and a line of pines climbs the hillside behind. The land falls away to the right into a valley with a stream and low scrub, and the eye is pulled past wooded ridges to a few soft lines of distant hills under wisps of cloud. The sheet carries no text or numerals.

Meaning & Symbolism

The contrast between the single foreground tree and the wide sweep of the valley is the heart of the picture. The pine gives the scene its scale and places the viewer inside the landscape, while the receding ridges open the view outward. The subject is the structure of rough, forested country and the shape of its trees, not a particular event. Henry Arthur Elkins, a draughtsman born in Vershire, Vermont, made the original sheet, which is untitled and undated in the record. Its direct pencil handling and close attention to terrain belong to the nineteenth-century American landscape tradition, in which artists recorded mountain and forest scenery as studies for later work.

Wearing the Landscape

On a tee, the drawing reads from a few feet away as a quiet, open scene: the dark pine anchors the chest, and the valley fades into the paler tones of the sheet as it spreads toward the shoulders and hem. The loose, searching linework suits fabric, where the print sits flat and the wide tan ground reads as a natural backdrop. Wearing it puts the single tree in front of you and the valley behind it, the same arrangement Elkins drew.
