Jacques Reich, 10 Aug 1852 - 8 Jul 1923 - Nathanael Greene - c. 1899-1920 - T-Shirt

A pen and ink portrait of Nathanael Greene, rendered in dense hatching on a warm cream sheet, puts the Continental general in a high-collared military coat with a steady, unhurried gaze.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure sits in three-quarter view, turned slightly toward the viewer's right, and the head is the clear focal point. Cross-hatching surrounds the head and shapes the buttoned, high-lapelled coat, while the face is built from finer, lighter strokes that keep the features soft against the darker tones. The paper is parchment-toned with a faint aged warmth, and the only lettering is the artist's signature, "Jacques Reich," in the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Greene was a Rhode Island-born general who became quartermaster general and later led the southern campaign against British forces in the Carolinas and Georgia. His retreats and battles wore down the enemy and helped bring about the British withdrawal from the region. The high stock collar, cravat and fringed shoulder ornament reflect the uniform conventions of his era, and the portrait presents him as one of the principal commanders of American independence. Jacques Reich drew the piece around 1899 to 1920, working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century tradition of illustrators who re-rendered historical likenesses in pen and ink, using hatching to build tone and volume.

Crafted for the Wearer's Chest

A portrait like this is built for close looking, and a tee puts it at the chest, where the head sits at eye level with anyone standing across from you. The hatching reads best at conversational distance, so the drawing's texture and the figure's composure come through as the shirt moves with you. Printed in its original monochrome palette, the design keeps the quiet, dignified character of the source drawing.
