James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - Reverend William White - 1833 - T-Shirt

This sepia portrait shows the Reverend William White as a bust-length elderly clergyman, his lined face turned toward the viewer in a steady, reflective gaze.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built around the head and shoulders, set within a soft oval vignette. Parchment cream fills most of the picture, giving the pale mass of the white gown and loosely folded sleeves real presence. A broad dark stole falls down the front of the gown and anchors the lower half, while the warm sepia brown and dark umber tones gather behind the head. Diagonal hatching darkens the background around the sitter and dissolves into the paper at the lower edge, so the eye settles on the face and the thin, long grey hair.

Meaning & Symbolism

The white gown and dark stole mark the sitter as a clergyman in the robes of his office, and the unhurried expression carries age, patience and spiritual authority. William White (1748-1836) was an American Episcopal clergyman who served as chaplain to the Continental Congress, as the first Episcopal Bishop of Pennsylvania, and later as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The artist, James Barton Longacre (1794-1869), was an American engraver who later became Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The 1833 date places this drawing in the years when Longacre was producing portraits of prominent Americans.

Designed for the Tee

The vignette has a natural edge, so the portrait sits well as a single centred image on the chest, where the face can be read at conversation distance. The restrained monochrome palette makes the design quiet and deliberate, letting the expression and the robes of office stand on their own.
