James Barton Longacre, 11 Aug 1794 - 1 - Unidentified Man - c. 1835 - T-Shirt

A bust-length man in a high-collared coat looks out from a pale sheet in a few confident pencil lines.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from fine, unshaded contours in sepia and dark brown, set against a pale grey-cream ground. The figure sits in the upper centre of the sheet, and his hair sweeps back from a high forehead with curled locks at the temples. A soft cravat gathers at his throat, and a long lapelled coat with a waistcoat beneath is suggested by a handful of strokes. Most of the sheet stays open, and the figure fades toward the lower edge, so the empty paper carries as much of the composition as the lines do.

Meaning & Symbolism

The restraint of the drawing reflects how American engravers worked in the 1830s. Sketches like this were made as the basis for finished engraved portraits and book illustrations, and the loose contours show a study made with refinement in mind. The record credits James Barton Longacre, a Philadelphia engraver who became Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1844, as the artist and dates the work to around 1835. The high collar and close-fitting coat place the sitter firmly in the fashion of that decade, while the sitter himself remains unnamed in the record.

Where the Drawing Meets the Shirt

Because the figure occupies the upper part of an open field, the design reads well across the chest, where the shirt's plain surface becomes the blank sheet. The eye settles on the face and the cravat first, then follows the coat down into the open space below. It is a quiet image that rewards a closer look in person, much like the original study rewards close viewing on paper.
