James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) - Cuisine a Lutzelbourg - 1858 - T-Shirt

A pencil study of a working farmhouse kitchen, where a woman in a long apron bends over her task beside a great hearth and a wall of hanging copper and ladles.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on pale paper, with loose graphite-grey strokes doing most of the work. The hearth and its hood fill the left side, and the figure stands at a counter near the centre, small against the room around her. Shelves of bottles, jars and a covered pot run along one wall, while a doorway and window open at right with vessels set on a high ledge. The floor and shadowed corners are suggested rather than finished, so the eye moves across the textures of cookware, stone and plaster. A small red numeral marks the date, the only colour on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Whistler drew this interior in 1858, during his years in Paris and his travels in eastern France. The pencil inscription names the village of Lutzelbourg in Lorraine as the setting. The scene gives no drama to domestic labour: food preparation is shown as part of the room's daily routine, and the woman is one element among the utensils and hearth. The sheet belongs to his early practice of recording provincial and ordinary life with a direct, economical line, the groundwork for the composed interiors and figure studies of his later career.

Made for Everyday Wear

A drawing of an ordinary room suits a shirt worn through ordinary days. The composition is best seen at close range, where the hatching and quiet grey shading of the kitchen come forward as the fabric moves with you. Each piece of the scene, from the hearth to the small figure at the counter, stays visible when worn, so the print reads as a record of one unhurried domestic moment.
