James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) - The Ermine Coat - 1870-1873 - T-Shirt

A standing woman, seen full length and facing the viewer, is drawn in black chalk with white highlights on brown paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from kraft brown, charcoal black and a little pale grey. The brown paper fills most of the field, and the figure is reduced to two tonal masses. The upper body is a short coat broken by white and grey chalk highlights and dark marks that suggest spotted fur. Below the waist, a long skirt is worked in dense black chalk, its hem ragged and fringe-like. The head is small beneath a close cap, and the face is drawn with only a few lines. A monogram sits at the right, and faint horizontal strokes mark the ground.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title names the upper garment as an ermine coat, and the broken white and dark accents give that fur its texture. The face is nearly blank, so the costume and its silhouette carry the image. James McNeill Whistler was American-born and worked mainly in London and Paris. In the early 1870s he made many chalk and pastel studies of women in fashionable dress on toned paper, reducing each figure to a few contrasts of tone. This sheet belongs to that group and shows how he set out costume, figure and ground with very few marks.

Where the Drawing Meets the Shirt

A standing figure fits the front of a tee well, because the drawing reads at chest scale and the eye takes in the whole silhouette at once. The pale coat and dark skirt divide the shirt into a light upper half and a heavy lower half, much as they do on the sheet. Wearing it puts a 1870s study of fashion on the body, in a form that moves with you every day.
