Jean-Francois Raffaelli, French, born - After the Battle - n.d. - T-Shirt

A charcoal drawing by Jean-François Raffaëlli shows bodies lying in snow in front of a village with a church spire, beneath a sky darkened by smoke.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is restrained: snow cream fills much of the page, broken by dark grey, charcoal black and mid grey. The village sits at the centre on a low rise, with its church spire and cluster of roofs standing clear of the smoke that sweeps across the upper sky. Bare, leafless trees and a hedgerow run through the middle distance, and a wooden fence line crosses the landscape. In the foreground, three figures lie stretched across the pale, trampled snow, while further fallen shapes sit toward the right. The horizontal layout moves the eye slowly from the village down to the bodies. The signature appears in the lower left corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title, After the Battle, sets the scene in the aftermath of conflict rather than in the fighting itself. The untouched village against the bodies on the ground makes the contrast the subject: ordinary rural life stands in for the human cost of war. Raffaëlli (1850–1924) was a French painter, printmaker and draughtsman who depicted the outskirts of Paris and working people, and who exhibited with the Impressionists in the 1880s. His charcoal drawings and prints show a strong feeling for atmosphere and tonal contrast, which this work carries through its dark sky and pale ground.

Designed for the Wearer

A drawing this dense in tone reads best when it is seen up close, and a tee brings it to the chest, where the smoke, snow and figures sit at the level of a viewer's own gaze. The composition works across the full front of the shirt, so the village and the fallen figures can be read as the wearer moves. The quiet at its centre is the part to look for.
