Jean-Louis Prieur the Younger, French, - Drawing for a candelabrum - 1780–90 v2 - T-Shirt

This pen and wash design shows a gilt candelabrum held aloft by a winged female figure on a marbled pedestal, drawn in the 1780s and 1790s.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure kneels upright on a low plinth, one wing lifted behind her shoulder, and rises to hold a flowered cup on her head. From that cup, the central stem springs upward, crowned by a flame, while three branches curl into scrolled volutes, each ending in a socket with a lit candle. The tall, square-sided pedestal is washed in pale green and lilac to suggest marble, with a gilt swag of drapery and a ring of moulding at its foot. Warm grey paper and pale yellow wash hold the whole composition together, and the vertical line of the figure and stem sets the structure of the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The kneeling winged figure recalls the sphinx, a motif drawn from Egyptian and classical art that was widely revived in European interiors of the late eighteenth century. Placing that figure beneath a light-bearing branch gives the object a sense of guardianship and of illumination carried upward. The gilded foliage, drapery swags and stepped base reflect neoclassical taste, which favoured restrained ornament, clear geometry and imagery taken from antiquity. Jean-Louis Prieur the Younger was a French designer and metalworker active in the later decades of the eighteenth century, when bronze and gilt-metal furnishings were closely tied to Parisian court taste. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Crafted for the Chest

A candelabrum is designed to be read from across a room, and this tee gives the drawing the same scale. Worn, the figure sits centred across the chest with the candle branches reaching toward the shoulders, so the eye moves up the shirt the way it moves up the original stem. The restrained palette of green, lilac and grey keeps the image calm, letting the fine pen lines and soft wash stand out against the fabric.
