John Henry Twachtman, born Cincinnati, - Tiger Lilies - ca. 1900 - T-Shirt

This pastel shows several tall, slender stems rising from the lower part of a warm ochre sheet, with pale pink tiger lily blossoms clustered at their tops and set along the stems.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is vertical, and the stems carry the eye upward through its length. The flowers have sharply reflexed petals, drawn with a few quick strokes that make them read as blush pink against the ground. Faint horizontal bands of pale blue-grey and pale yellow-green cross the background, while the ochre tan dominates the whole surface. A signature sits in the lower left corner. There is no narrative or figure beyond the plant itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

Tiger lilies are a familiar garden and roadside flower, and their angular petals make a strong shape against soft ground. Here that contrast is softened. Color and touch carry the image, so the sheet works as a study of a single flowering plant in open light rather than a record of any scene. John Henry Twachtman (1853–1902) was born in Cincinnati, studied in Munich and Paris, and returned to America as one of its leading Impressionist landscape painters. In 1898 he helped found the group Ten American Painters. Working in oil and pastel, he often turned to flowers and plants alongside landscape. This sheet, dated circa 1900, reflects the delicate, light-filled handling of his late work.

Made for the Shirt

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side, so the design wraps the chest and moves as you do. The vertical stems run down the front, and the pale blossoms sit where the light falls, so the wearer carries a quiet study of light and color rather than a bold graphic. This is an independent reproduction of the original pastel.
