Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Armenian Pilgrim-Turk Pilgrim - unknown - T-Shirt

A seated man reads on a striped rug while a second figure reclines beside him, two travellers drawn side by side in warm watercolour.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream fills nearly half the sheet, giving the figures room to breathe. Tan brown and yellow ochre carry the rug and the robes, with sage green and a touch of rust red picking out the trousers and cap. The upper figure sits in a long brown robe with dark braid trim, holding a sheet of paper or a small book in both hands. Below him, a figure rests on a pale pink cushion in a yellow jacket and green trousers, a white wrap around the head. Slippers sit on the floor at the left, and a thin yellow stick lies across the rug. Handwritten captions read Armenian Pilgrim and Turk Pilgrim, and a column of notes runs down the upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

The paired captions present the two figures as representatives of different communities of travellers. Pilgrimage to holy sites was a central practice across the Near East, and the reading and resting postures suggest the pauses of a long journey, when travellers rested, read or prayed. Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, drew the sheet in the 1840s, a period when artists often recorded the people they met. Here costume and posture mark identity rather than portray named individuals. The loose washes, pencil notes and annotated layout belong to the travel sketchbook pages of his work.

Wearing the Sketch

A tee is seen from every angle as the wearer moves, so the reading figure and the reclining figure stay in view as the composition shifts with each step. The paired captions sit within reach of the eye, and the warm cream palette reads as a single soft field rather than a framed picture. The sketch has been reproduced for this shirt from Kellogg's original, which is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.
