Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Bedouin - unknown - T-Shirt

A pencil study of several men in draped robes and head coverings, gathered close on a floor, with one hooded figure meeting the viewer's eye while a companion smokes a long pipe.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from graphite grey and pale grey lines over a warm buff parchment ground, which dominates the composition. Hatching carries the weight of the cloth: heavy folds of the cloak at left, the wound turban and loose robes at right. The figures are packed tightly together, and the background is reduced to a few lines suggesting a tent or enclosure, so the men read as the entire scene. At the left, the bearded man in the pointed hood looks straight out of the picture, while the turbaned man at right has turned his back to us toward his companion.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing captures informal rest and conversation. The close seating, the shared pipe and the relaxed postures suggest a pause in the day, when people of one community gathered to talk. The contrast between the watchful gaze of the hooded man and the turned figures gives the sheet a quiet sense of observation. It comes from the travel sketchbooks of Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, who drew people he met on his journeys in their dress and everyday attitudes. Studies like this one record his interest in clothing, gesture and group arrangement, made direct and unposed in the nineteenth century.

On the T-Shirt

A drawing this detailed rewards a close look, and a tee puts it within easy reach. The figures and their hatched folds sit across the chest, so the viewer reads the gathering the way the sketchbook invites: one face turned outward, the rest turned in toward their conversation. The soft buff tone of the parchment and the grey line work keep the design calm and readable at arm's length.
