Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Gibraltar - unknown - T-Shirt

This pencil and wash drawing shows the port town of Gibraltar rising from the water beneath the great limestone face of the Rock.

Visual Elements & Composition

The Rock fills the right half of the sheet, its sunlit upper face and shadowed ledges built up in soft layers of grey and buff. Below it, flat-roofed houses and a taller belfry-like structure climb the slope toward a long quay. On the left, a few masted vessels sit at anchor in the bay under a sky worked with loose, swirling wash. The lettering at lower left reads Gibraltar No. 1, with the date February 26, 1841 beneath it.

Meaning & Symbolism

Gibraltar had been a British garrison since 1704 and sat at the entrance to the Mediterranean, so its harbour was a point of passage for shipping and military traffic. The houses pressed tightly against the cliff show how little ground lay between sea and stone. The anchored ships mark the harbour as a place of trade and movement. The numbering points to a series of views, each recording the place from a new vantage. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, was an American painter known for travel landscapes and topographical views made in Europe and the Near East. This sheet reflects his sketchbook method of recording towns and coastlines as he travelled.

Built for the Wearer

A shirt carries its image across the chest and moves with the body, so the composition is read in pieces: the sunlit Rock at the shoulder, the crowded town at the centre, the ships drifting toward the sleeve. The drawing's quiet tonal range of parchment, tan and umber suits a piece worn close to the body, where the details of the houses and the quay come into view at conversation distance.
