Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Malta (Ship) - n.d. - T-Shirt

A pencil sketch of a two-masted schooner under sail, heeled over a choppy sea, with the words "malta - in sight" written in the lower corner.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built in graphite grey on parchment cream, and the cream paper dominates the sheet. The schooner sits low in the centre, its mainsail and foresail shaded with loose, quick strokes and its rigging lines fanning out between the two masts. Above the vessel, the paper is left almost entirely empty. Below, the open sea is broken into short ripples along the horizon. The only text is the handwritten inscription "malta - in sight" in the lower right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inscription fixes the moment at sea on the approach to Malta, when the island first appeared to a traveller arriving by water. For a nineteenth-century sketcher, a sail on the horizon marked the end of a passage and the start of a new port of call. The wide expanse of blank paper above the waves carries that pause between sighting land and arriving. The drawing was made by Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American painter born in Manlius, New York, who recorded ships, shorelines and harbour scenes on his Mediterranean travels. Its economical pencil handling reflects the sketchbook practice of the period, where observations were noted quickly for later use in finished paintings.

Cut for the Chest

A tee carries its image across the chest and turns with the wearer, so the schooner moves as you do. The empty sky of the sketch gives the front of the shirt room to breathe, and the small inscription in the corner reads as a detail to notice up close. Here the quiet, expectant mood of a ship coming into sight travels with you.
