Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Ruins of Greek Temple, Azani, Phrygia - 1845 - T-Shirt

This is a watercolour study of a Greek temple colonnade at Azani, Phrygia, painted in 1845 by the American artist Miner Kilbourne Kellogg.

Visual Elements & Composition

The temple is seen at an angle, with a row of fluted columns rising from a stepped base against a pale ground. The front portico, with its entablature and cornice, sits at the centre and carries the most weight. A receding line of slender shafts runs along the left side, and blue-grey shadows gather inside the colonnade. In the foreground, a fallen block and scattered fragments lie beside a small animal and a crouched figure. The palette is built from warm ochre and sepia washes, and a hand-lettered inscription names the site and the date.

Meaning & Symbolism

Azani sits in inland central Anatolia, and the site corresponds to ancient Aizanoi, known for its well-preserved temple of Zeus. The drawing records a standing colonnade that still reads as a building amid open ground. For nineteenth-century viewers, ruins like these spoke to the passing of civilisations. Kellogg, who worked in watercolour and oil and travelled abroad in the 1840s, made studies on the spot like this one to record architectural form and atmosphere. The tension at the heart of the image is between the orderly rhythm of the columns and the emptiness surrounding them.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries the drawing across the chest, so the colonnade reads as a single, upright composition when worn. The columns run vertically, which suits the shape of a torso, and the open ground around the temple becomes the negative space of the shirt. Pick the size that suits your fit, then let the ruins stand on their own in the wash of ochre.
