Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Saltwood Castle - unknown - T-Shirt

This watercolour over pencil shows the gatehouse of Saltwood Castle in Kent, England, drawn from a low path with its towers rising above the viewer.

Visual Elements & Composition

Two round towers flank a tall square block, and their pale stone walls are pierced by narrow windows while crenellated parapets crown the upper stages. A pointed archway opens at the base of the central tower, which anchors the whole sheet. Ivy and bushes spill over a lower wall on the left, and a weathered stone pier stands at the edge of the frame. The palette is built from warm stone cream, dusky brown, sky grey-blue and muted green, with soft washes of ochre across the clouds. A small figure stands on the path at lower right, giving the castle its scale.

Meaning & Symbolism

Saltwood Castle stands near Hythe on the south-eastern edge of England. Its solid walls and towers are drawn as a fortified mass, signalling the power and defence of the medieval building rather than its decay. The castle is tied to 1170, when knights who went on to kill Archbishop Thomas Becket were said to have stayed there on their way to Canterbury. The quiet landscape and lone figure reflect the building's later life as a place to visit and to picture. The drawing is the work of American painter Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born in Manlius, New York, who travelled to draw buildings and landscapes. It belongs to the nineteenth-century taste for picturesque old buildings, recorded on site for their form, texture and setting.

Designed for the Wraparound Front

A tee carries this scene across the chest, so the towers and archway read as one broad image at a glance, with the figure on the path resting near the hem. The solemn, quiet mood of the sketch suits a shirt worn every day, letting the castle's stone and sky stay the focus as you move through the day.
