Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Sheep - unknown - T-Shirt

A shaggy sheep stands in three-quarter profile before a ruined wall, its head turned back toward the viewer in a pencil and wash study from Upper Egypt.

Visual Elements & Composition

Dense, wavering pencil strokes build the heavy fleece in soft grey, sinking to deeper shadow at the animal's feet. Behind it rises a squared, weathered structure, its surface shaded with vertical hatching and small pale flecks. The whole sheet is toned in warm, mottled brown, and the parchment ground carries much of the image. The inscription in the lower right reads Upper Egypt, January 23, 1844, and the monogram MKK marks the sheet as Kellogg's own.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing of animal and architecture is the subject. A living domestic creature and worn masonry receive the same unhurried attention, so an ordinary pastoral moment takes on a quiet antiquity. Kellogg, an American painter who worked in Egypt and the Near East in the 1840s, recorded the people, animals and buildings he met on that journey. This sheet belongs to the directly observed studies from those travels, where incidental subjects were drawn with the same care as monuments.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen in motion, so the sheep's turned head and the drifting fleece stay legible at conversation distance. The ruin sits behind the animal like a backdrop, and a front print lets that pairing frame the figure at the chest. Wearing it puts a sketch made in 1844 into everyday view.
